LSIRD network - Livestock Systems in Integrated Rural Development - LSIRD is a network of European researchers to encourage the development of sustainable extensive livestock systems

Gelston Hills Angus - Gelston Hills has been a beef cattle property since July of 1987. The original herd was a commercial herford-simmental cross producing strong beefy cattle with high calving ease and high muscles frames. The evolution to black baldy cattle came with the growth of the feedlot industry in South Eastern Australia. The feedlots, to a great extent, have paid a premium for black cattle. The Angus breed has the right colour, calving ease, eye muscle and marbeling traits. So...In 1994 we began to make the step to breeding registered Angus cattle.

Big is not always beautiful, and the littler classes of bovines can produce beef & milk (Dexters are dual-purpose) equally as well if not better than their larger cousins. When you get into the area of conversion ratios, stocking capacities etc etc, the smaller animals often come out above making them a serious proposition for the smaller farmer.
